SAVE OUR BRASS!
A brass band recovery and rebuilding project
presents
A Traditional Jazz Clinic with Dr. Michael White
SAVE OUR BRASS! is a grass-roots, post-Katrina initiative that has helped to reunite the dispersed brass bands of New Orleans. Since Hurricane Katrina, SAVE OUR BRASS! has raised money that went directly to NOLA musicians; helped NOLA musicians find gigs nationwide; played at relief shelters after the storm; organized numerous benefits and events; and collected and distributed instruments to NOLA musicians.
Now we are in the midst of an exciting new project in collaboration with Dr. Michael White, noted scholar and leading performer of traditional New Orleans Jazz.
The disorienting aftermath of Hurricane Katrina showed us how fragile even the vital tradition of our music can be, and we caught a glimpse of what it could mean for our horns and our harmonies to fall silent. Today, the brass bands of New Orleans are playing again—yet many of them have seen with new eyes the importance of the traditions they come out of, and the importance of guarding and sustaining those traditions.
With the critical involvement of Dr. Michael White, SAVE OUR BRASS! is hosting a series of three-session traditional New Orleans Jazz clinics for brass band musicians. During these clinics, Dr. White lectures, discusses, workshops, and performs with the younger generation, encouraging and guiding the essential blending of old and new which, when executed with thought and care, brings out the best in New Orleans music.
The first clinic sessions, sponsored by Putumayo World Music, the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, and private donors, took place between April 19 and May 3.
We are currently planning another series to take place during Summer 2006! Please help us continue this important project by donating to
